Glamify yourself for TIFF..

9 Sep

It’s the beginning of September, and you know what that means in Toronto. It’s TIFF time. The city is buzzing with excitement, it’s full of celebrities and packed with of events.

If you live in Toronto, especially downtown, chances are you will eventually get caught up in the TIFF whirlwind. Whether going to viewings or attending parties, you may find yourself wanting some red carpet style yourself… and why shouldn’t you? Who said you have to be wowed by celebrities? Why can’t you wow them?

Here are some of our favourite red carpet hair styles to inspire your own:

Oh, Uma. How we love you. This has to be the best red carpet style that Uma Thurman has ever donned. From the colour to her piecy waves strategically pulled back, she looks effortlessly gorgeous in this romantic hair style.

At the 2011 VMA Awards, Beyonce showed off her new baby belly, glow and simple (but stunning) side-swept locks. Her soft side bangs frame her face perfectly and a low, soft, side pony is simply elegant.

Psssst… I have a lady crush on Diane Kruger. She is the queen of imperfect, yet absolutely stunning, red carpet hair. From messy braids to slightly undone updos, she rarely goes wrong. With the accessory and loose tendrils, Kruger shows that not everything has to be “just so” when it comes to a glam look.

If old school Hollywood glamour is more your speed, consider a look like Katherine Heigl’s. Classic yet fun, a throwback to the golden days of show biz is never wrong for the red carpet.

When Adele’s hair is blown out like this it looks like she has the best hair in the world. If you want big, soft, voluminous curls for an event, this is the way to go. And don’t even get me started on her colour. Ah-may-zing.

Obviously, I have to end with Ryan Gosling – and this needs no explanation. Ladies, I’m sure none of you would mind if your men styled themselves like this. All we can say is: delicious.

So don’t ever let those pesky, beautiful celebrities outshine you again – get inspiration from their style and outdo them! After all, who doesn’t want to look like a star for a day?

Hot child in the city…

17 Jun

When summer rolls around, you notice a new bounce in people’s step, more smiles and a genuine happiness when the sun is out. Not to mention the obvious transformation in fashion. But it’s not just people shedding layers and rocking chic sandals to show of their pedicured footsies; when the hot weather comes, people dare to be different with their hair. And how we love the summer change!

Summer is a great time for a hair makeover. And the more drastic the change, the more fun! Think about it. Come springtime, you probably think about getting lighter highlights for summer, or getting a fun and easy-going cut that can work for both the office and the cottage, and that will save you from the dreaded “Thermal Hair” (think  heavy, poofy hair that makes you feel like you might as well be wearing  a snowsuit and toque when you wear it down in the heat… that’s Thermal Hair.) You want to avoid that dreaded phenomenon as much as possible, right? Cue the summer makeover!

“This Thermal Hair is killing us!”
Most good salons offer free consultations with a stylist, so if you’re considering a summery change but aren’t really sure about what you want or if you’re ready, book 15 minutes to go over your inspirations and options. Bring in pictures of anything and everything that you think you’d like to have and your stylist can advise you on what would work best with your hair type, face shape and colouring.

Are you the impulsive type? Look through some magazines to give the stylist a general idea of the look you want to go for, book an appointment and take the plunge. Hair styles are meant to change and summer is the perfect excuse!

Have you always had long, straight hair? Try adding some texture and movement with layers… maybe even go shorter! Try a texturized lob or bob. Already have one and are adventurous? Go for a pixie! Think about whether you have your hair in a ponytail or away from your face the majority of the time. If you do, you probably have confidence showing off what is likely great facial structure. The moral of the story? You won’t be self-conscious with a shorter, off-the-face ‘do! You should also ask your stylist to work with your natural texture so that your style is easy to maintain in the summer. Afterall, who wants to spend time with a blow dryer when it’s 35 degrees outside?

Summer is also a great time to play with your colour. Add in some sunkissed highlights or go for a drastic change like this season’s red trend. But if you’re adding colour, make sure you protect it from the sun with products that have built-in UV protection to make it last.

Although a lot of us take our hair very seriously and are wary of any drastic changes, taking on a whole new look can be one of the most fun and easy ways to enjoy summer. And losing some bulk by adding layers can make a big difference in the Thermal Hair situation. You know the old stylist saying, “If you wear your hair pulled back most of the time, you won’t miss it when it’s gone”? How true that can be in the hot hot summer heat.

Crusaders in the life-long quest to de-frizz…

26 May

Taming frizzy, unruly, poofy hair is a life-long quest for many women, especially in damp and humid climates. Just ask female Torontonians in the middle of July.

Straighteners and relaxers are not new to the beauty industry, but in the past they have been very intense and full of chemicals. Although the results from last year’s breakthrough Keratin treatment, The Brazilian Blowout, were amazing, the product was later pulled from Canadian and European markets due to unacceptable levels of formaldehyde compromising the health of consumers and stylists applying the treatment over a long period of time.

Four months later, there is now a formaldehyde-free Keratin formula promising to grant the wishes of the frizzy haired. Dióra Professionnel has introduced their Keratherapy line of treatments and products as a safe alternative to traditional keratin treatments. Keratherapy is free of formaldehyde, urea, aldehydes and other harsh chemicals and is in compliance with The European Union, Canadian and other international health and safety regulations worldwide.

It boasts a formula that is derived from a blend of orange peel oil and Natural Certified Organic ingredients including: jojoba oil; aloe vera; green tea; and pomegranate and marigold extracts. The products also use Moroccan argan oil, pure keratin, collagen, amino acids and proteins to rebuild, and add strength and elasticity to the hair.

Although Dióra calls this “the evolution of brazilian keratin,” the Keratherapy available in Canada is not a straightening treatment like the Brazilian Blowout. Its results can’t be compared to the old Keratin treatments that contained formaldehyde, or even the Intense Renewal Keratherapy treatment that is only available in the States; it will not eliminate curls or waves in the hair. It will, however, smooth, tame and de-frizz unruly hair for up to 12 weeks and the treatment reduces drying time in half. It can be used on coloured or highlighted hair and it, in fact, helps to lock in the colour and extend the vibrancy of blonde or “high fashion” shades.

At Haartek, the whole procedure takes about two hours and you can’t wash or put any product in your hair for 48 hours. Dióra offers a Keratin Infused Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner that is free of sulfates, parabens, sodium chloride, propylene glycol, DEA and TEA, but any shampoo or conditioner that is sulfate free, like Kevin Murphy or Eufora, is safe to use after the treatment.

If you’re interested in getting any kind of straightening or de-frizzing treatment done, it’s best to consult with your stylist to see which is the right one for you.

But to all my fellow frizzy-haired friends, at least we know there are options out there that can help solve our dilemma, even just temporarily… ‘cos shaving my hair off is just not an option – my head is far too big.
