It’s come undone..

30 Sep

It’s no secret that I am a fan of undone hair. I’ve written more than a few posts dedicated to various purposely messy looks… and this is no exception.

But why is the “undone look” so popular? Why this aversion to looking polished?

I have a few theories. First of all, messy hair can be incredibly sexy. I’m not talking about “dirty teenager” or “just-been-camping-for-a-week-and-can’t-remember-what-a-shower-feels-like” messy, I’m talking about the “night-after-a-great-party” or, if I may be so bold, the infamous “sex” hair. It just looks so carefree and cool… but you know there was an initial style behind it that just became, well… undone.

The second reason might be a rebellion against being a slave to heated hair tools… or the heat and humidity of the city for that matter. Why punish your hair (or your patience) when casual hair can look great for work and, with the right makeup and accessories, for a night on the town.

My third theory might be a bit of a stretch, but I think it has some merit. I point my finger at the rise of hipsterdom; there must be some correlation between the abundance of hipsters in the world and the popularity of messy hair. Just the fact that undone hair is styled to look messy reeks of hipsters, no?

But regardless of the reasoning behind this trend I am hopelessly in love with it. There is just something so appealing about less-than-perfect hair that looks somehow perfect. From tousled waves to undone top knots and chignons to messy braids, all of these styles demand some effort, but not too much. And this nonchalance is what makes it irresistible.

If you don’t understand, I dare you to take a look at some of our favourite “undone” looks. I’ll bet you fall in love too.

Too cool for school…

21 Sep

We’ve been talking about fall trends and fashions since the end of August, but it seems we’ve forgotten the most important time of year for so many – back to school!

September isn’t just about buying new clothes and supplies for school. A trip to the salon is almost mandatory to get that great cut or colour for the new school year. Whether you’re in high school or university, your hair can define your style, help you fit in or give you that stand-out-from-the-crowd quality. Whatever your aim is, great hair is important!

There seems to be two big trends in Hollywood for the young and fabulous: long and wavy with subtle ombre highlights ; or a choppy bob. Either way, they’re both fresh, young, low maintenance and fun!

Here are some of our favourite back-to-school styles:

Leighton Meester’s subtle ombre locks are effortless chic for the new school year. They add interest to her long, wavy mane and are extremely low maintenance – your roots are supposed to show! However, ombre highlights are not an excuse to be lazy… they should look deliberate and should only be a few shades lighter than your root colour – think sun-kissed vacation hair rather than growing out blonde colour.

This curly, layered lob is stunning on Selena Gomez and is perfect for back-to-school! Lobs and bobs frame your face and are still long enough that you can braid the front or put it up in the ever-popular top knot for those early morning classes!

It’s a given that students pull their hair back in buns and ponytails all the time! But there’s nothing wrong with adding a little style to that pony. Low, side-ponies are back and when embellished with a braid or twist are a fabulous alternative to a boring, high ponytail. And it’s just as easy!

Uber-long, honey-coloured hair seems to be a die-hard trend for the under-25 crowd. To make sure it doesn’t look too plain try adding different braids or subtle highlights.

It caused quite a stir when Diana Agron chopped off her hair into a shaggy bob… but we absolutely love it! She still looks young and fresh but a bit edgy! And she can keep it tousled or flat-iron it for a sleek look!

Blake Lively has the quintessential young, fresh look. From her sun-kissed colour to her easy, breezy waves, Lively is known for her trendy hair.

As we can see from young starlets, having gorgeous hair doesn’t have to be fussy or old-fashioned. In fact, the more carefree and easy your style is the better! You’re young… you should have fun with your hair! Experimenting with your style and trying out the latest trends is one of the best parts of being in your teens or early twenties so take advantage! You’re only young once, right?

Oh, beehive!

3 Aug

In honour of Amy Winehouse, this post is dedicated to that fantastically big, teased and lacquered hair that none but her could pull off quite the same in modern times (though, some would argue she didn’t quite pull it off). Yes, we’re talking about that crazy mass of hair atop her head – the beehive.

Most popular in the 1960s, the beehive was created by Margaret Vinci Heldt in Chicago. An award winning stylist and salon owner, Heldt was asked in 1960 by Modern Beauty Salon magazine to design a new hairstyle that would reflect the coming decade. It originated as a variation of the pageboy and bouffant styles that were elaborately teased and hairsprayed and was also given the name B-52, as it resembled the bulbous nose of the B-52 Stratofortress bomber. The style has been modeled by Dusty Springfield, The Ronettes and Joanna Lumley (in Absolutely Fabulous) amongst others, and has made its way back into fashion in Chanel shows and on modern celebrities.

Here’s a mix of retro and modern beehives that we can’t get enough of. Are you bold enough to fashion this ‘do for a special occasion, or even everyday?

It’s summertime, and the living is easy…

30 Jun

The long weekend is here. And chances are, you’re spending time in the (hopefully) beautiful, sunny weather… preferably on a beach in Muskoka.

It’s no chance that this summer’s top hair trends like braids and messy top knots are perfect for a laid back cottage weekend. Here are some tips for cute, low maintenance hair styles, whether you’re enjoying a beer on the dock or having fun in the water.

Tie it up

Forget the boring ponytail this weekend and go for something a bit more fun – the top knot! Extremely low maintenance, the top knot only takes seconds and ensures your hair is out of your face while you’re having fun in the sun… plus, it’s perfect for the-day-after-washing hair! And with helpers like Goody Spin Pins, all it takes is for you to twist your hair into a bun, insert the pins, and you’re ready for the beach!

Braids

Braids have been hyped enough in past posts that you get the hint why we love them. Because it’s “the messier, the better”, they’re perfect for the beach, the boat or the campfire. Plus, you can wear a cute hat to protect your colour from fading and your face from getting sunburned! Our fav? The messy, side fishtail braid.

Beachy Waves

What could be more low maintenance than embracing your natural texture and letting your hair down? Textured, beachy waves are super sexy, trendy and perfect for lounging around the cottage. The key to success if you aren’t lucky enough to be frolicking in an ocean? A texture spray like Kevin Murphy Hair Resort Spray or KMS Sea Salt Spray. Psssssst… Wanna know a secret? These products are also perfect to add texture to your top knot or braid.

So now you know our favourite styles for the cottage. But even though your hair should be low-maintenance over the weekend, don’t forget you still need to take care of it! Bring a leave-in conditioner with UV protection to prevent your colour from fading and your hair from drying out in the sun. And if you don’t have a shower? Bring some dry shampoo to add oomph and texture to your summer style. No matter what your plans are for the long weekend, show your hair some love!

Forget the dress! What about the hair!?

22 Jun

It’s almost the end of June and wedding season is well underway, but are you a bride-to-be that has no clue what to do with her hair on the big day? Fear not! That’s what blogs like these are for!

Whether your hair is short or long, curly or straight, the creativity and skill of your stylist will ensure that you find the perfect ‘do for your wedding! Doing your research is important too, however. Have a look at the cornucopia of wedding magazines and websites for style inspiration – this will give you an idea of the hairstyles you like… and give a reference for ones you hate.

Once you have an idea of the style you think will suit your type of wedding, the most important step is booking a consultation with your stylist.  If possible, find a quiet day at the salon where your stylist can dedicate a couple of hours to trying several different styles on you. Bring in any pictures of hair you like and accessories you may use to help the stylist create what you have envisioned. The consultation is especially important if you plan on using extensions – the stylists needs time to order the right kind and you may have to colour them to match your hair.

“It’s a big day and you want it to be perfect ,” says Stylist Olivia. “You want to eliminate any stress you can the day of, and knowing exactly what your hair will be like will do that. Especially if you are using extensions or accessories!”

Here are a few of our favourite bridal styles, from boho to princess, to help inspire you for your big day!

Yes, I have braids in my hair. No, I don’t yodel.

27 May

If you haven’t heard by now that braids are really hot this spring/summer you may just be living under a rock. No matter where you turn, or what magazine you flip through, countless styles of braids are being sported by celebrities, models, fashionistas and hipsters alike.

Some are of the opinion that braids should be reserved for school girls and milkmaids only – they have no place in a mature, stylish woman’s life. I whole heartedly disagree. Sure, if overdone, braids can look childish or like you should be off yodeling in the alps, but if done right, they can add that playful yet sophisticated touch to a summery ‘do!

“This is a must-do trend for simple, summer styling,” says Associate Stylist Sandra. “And the messier the better… There is no wrong way to braid!”

Here are some of my favourite braids that you can try this summer, be it an updo for a special occasion or just a day in the sun. I think any doubters will be silenced.

What do you think of the summer braid trend? Is it something you would or have already tried?
